Rationalists have traditionally recommended that we appeal to a rational standard when we evaluate particular beliefs, theories, or actions; when we judge the appropriateness of changes in our belief or conceptual structures; and when we attempt to settle competing claims to intellectual authority amongst diverse conceptual structures.
