U. S. Army in the West, 1870-1880

WRITING FROM THE HEADQUARTERS of the Thirteenth Infantry in 1875, Colonel Philip Regis De Trobriand observed, "It is a remarkable fact, that the whole story of modern accoutrements can be summed up as a long and obstinate fight between the military governments and authorities, which will persist in loading the soldiers, and the soldiers who will still more obstinately persist in unloading themselves."
