Damaris Spenser has lived for years as a penniless orphan with her miserly grandfather. Finally though she discovers she is in fact an heiress and resolves to change her life. But in doing so a local fortune hunter attempts to coerce her into marriage. At the last moment, she is rescued by the enigmatic Lord Weald who talks her into a fake engagement to protect her good name.
