Set in Haiti during the reign of the dictator Papa Doc Duvalier, this bleak novel of political turpitude is widely regarded as one of Greene’s best. Desperately trying to sell his hotel, British expatriate Brown becomes involved in a series of desperate acts involving rebels, arms dealers, corrupt politicians and Duvalier’s notorious secret police, the Tonton Macoute.
